Abstract
Science fiction originated from the Western world and had a group of loyal
readers in the West. But due to Chinese readers’ prejudice against science fiction, it
developed slowly in China. As a result, there are not many scholars in China studying
on science fiction translation, let alone its translation. As Liu Cixin and Hao Jingfang
have won the Hugo Award in succession, the Chinese science fiction has received
extensive attention at home and abroad. Therefore, the number of the studies related
to Chinese science fiction translation has also increased rapidly.
Santi is seen as a milestone in the history of Chinese science fiction. Santi and its
English version are very typical. Thus, under the guidance of reception theory, this
thesis takes the English version of Santi as an example to analyze Chinese science
fiction translation from the aspects of “reader-centered principle”, “horizon of
expectation” and “appealing structure”. Different from traditional translation theories,
reception theory emphasizes readers’ center position in literary studies. For this reason,
readers should be in the center position of translation studies. And in the translation
process, the translator should take readers’ reception ability and horizon of
expectation consideration, fill in the vacancy, analyze the indeterminacy and
appropriately retain appealing structure in the original text.
Based on the case analysis in the thesis, the author thinks that the guiding role
of reception theory mainly reflected in three aspects. First, readers’ reception of the
text should be concerned by the translator. In other words, target language readersiii
should be in the center position of translation practice and theoretical studies. Second,
the translator should take readers’ horizon and expectation account and help them
to rebuild their horizon by using the foreignizing translation strategy appropriately.
Finally, considering readers’ reception ability, the translator should ively
concretize the indeterminacies in the text and fill in the vacancies. It’s helpful for
readers to have a full understanding and reception of Chinese science fiction without
too much damage of the features of original text.

Chapter 1 Introduction
This chapter is a brief introduction of the whole thesis. At the beginning of this
chapter, some background information is introduced. Then the significance and
research questions of this study are discussed. At the end of this chapter, the author
briefly introduces the outline of this thesis.
1.1 Background of the Study
Science fiction (sci-fi or SF) originated from western countries and had many
excellent writers and a large group of enthusiastic readers in the West. For instance,
Jules Gabriel Verne, “the Father of Science Fiction” and another famous sci-fi writer
Isaac Asimov have many readers all over the world. Different from other popular
novels, science fiction always has a direct connection with science and technology. To
some extent, science fiction has been seen as a prediction of the future life. And many
scenes and items described in SF works finally come true in the future.
There are many excellent science fiction writers and loyal readers in the West.
But in China, science fiction developed slowly for a long time. However, the success
of Santi and its English version made science fiction become a popular literal genre in
China. What’s more, it also encouraged the creation of Chinese science fiction. In
2016, Hao Jingfang, with her short novel Folding Beijing, became the second Chinese
writer who has won Hugo Award. It seems that Chinese science fiction experiences its
spring time now. As a result, there are more and more researches focusing on the2
translation of science fiction in China, and many of them prefer to Chinese
sci-fi works as their research material.
Even though, current researches related to science fiction translation in China
are still at the beginning stage, and there are rarely completed or mature theories
about science fiction translation. Previous studies on this subject are mainly focused
on a particular text or a single aspect of science fiction translation. In addition, most
of the previous studies choose English science fiction works instead of Chinese texts
as the study material.
One of the most remarkable features of Chinese science fiction is the usage of
cultural-related elements. In other words, there are many information about Chinese
culture, history and social life in Chinese science fiction works. On the one hand, this
kind of information attracted a group of Western readers. Through reading these
Chinese sci-fi works, they can gain some knowledge of Chinese history and culture.
On the other hand, these factors are also hard for translators to deal with. It needs to
be analyzed and discussed how to satisfy Western readers’ expectations and maintain
its original style at the same time.
1.2 Purpose of the Study
Since the Chinese science fiction The Three-Body Problem published in
America in 2013, it has been well received and admitted by English readers. Its writer
Liu Cixin also becomes the first Chinese SF writer who has won the Nebula Award
and Hugo Award. The success of The Three-Body Problem attracted Chinese readers’3
attention and invoked their interest in science fiction. And it also promoted the
development and researches of science fiction in China.
To some extent, contemporary Chinese science fiction began from translating
foreign works. But the corresponding studies in China are lagging far behind from the
Western world. There are few scholars in China working at science fiction translation,
let alone Chinese science fiction translation. One of the important reasons is that
Chinese SF works are not as mature and popular as foreign works. In addition, the
literariness and scientific features of sci-fi works make it more difficult to translate.
For these reasons, taking The Three-Body Problem as an example, this thesis
aims to analyze the translation of Chinese science fiction, and intends to discuss and
summarize some principles and strategies in the translation process. From the
perspective of reception theory, the author of this thesis attempts to answer the
following questions:
(1). Why can reception theory be applied to science fiction translation?
(2). What strategies are used in the translation of the Chinese science fiction The
Three-Body Problem from the perspective of reception theory?
In this thesis, not only the source text and the translated text, but also the
translator’s view and target language readers’ comments on the English version of
Santi will be discussed and analyzed. According to reception theory, readers play a
significant role in the reception of a literary text. Through analyzing the translator and
target language readers’ understanding and their reception of the text, this thesis
